The historic change, coming at the beginning of a three-day presidential trip to Alaska on Monday, is a sign of how hard the White House will push during Obama's remaining 16 months as president to ensure his fight to address climate change is part of his legacy.

Nazi gold train could contain ornate £250m 'Amber Room' given to Tsar Peter the Great

The Nazi gold train could contain an ornate room crafted out of amber, gold and precious jewels which has been missing since it was looted during World War Two.

Journalist Tom Bower, who wrote Nazi Gold: the Full Story of the Fifty-Year Swiss-Nazi Conspiracy to Steal, has said he believes there is a high likelihood the hidden locomotive is filled with art and precious jewels, rather than bars of gold. But what he really hopes to find in the train discovered abandoned in a tunnel underneath a Polish mountain is the Amber Room, stolen from the Catherine Palace, near St Petersburg, in about 1941.

'Solar Classroom in a Box' project aims to change the face of education in Africa

Along with the University of Edinburgh School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture, Aleutia, in London, will begin rolling out an education initiative across Kenya called Solar Classroom in a Box.

The flat-pack classrooms will be sent over to each of the country’s 47 counties, with one able to fit into a pick-up truck. With field-proven solar technology – combined with low power computers – Aleutia saw the need for the project after discovering how Africa accounts for over a sixth of the world’s population – yet it only generates four per cent of global electricity, a problem which looks set to get worse as the demand for power grows.

The Dead Sea is dying

The Dead Sea, a unique body of water marked by mineral-rich, unusually salty water - nearly 10 times saltier than the world's oceans - is dying. Its water level is dropping by roughly one metre each year.

Israel, Jordan, and the occupied West Bank all border the Dead Sea, and have taken steps to deal with its disappearance. According to Bromberg, the two main reasons for the dropping water level are mineral extraction by Israeli and Jordanian companies in the artificially shallow southern basin, and the fact that 95 percent of the Jordan River - the Dead Sea's main source of replenishing water - is being diverted.

Visit the Dead Sea before it disappears.

Facebook hits billion users in a day

For the first time over a billion people used Facebook on a single day, according to company founder Mark Zuckerberg.

The "milestone" was reached when "1 in 7 people on Earth used Facebook to connect with their friends and family", he said in a post. Facebook has nearly 1.5 billion users who log in at least once a month, but this was the most in a single day. The company gained its billionth user in October 2012.
It was founded in 2004 by Mr Zuckerberg while he was a Harvard student.

In March this year, Facebook employees moved into their new Frank Gehry-designed Silicon Valley headquarters in California – a 40,000-square-metre office building with "the largest open floor plan in the world" and a huge rooftop park.

Obama marks rebirth of New Orleans 10 years after Hurricane Katrina

President Barack Obama is marking 10 years since Hurricane Katrina by celebrating the revival of New Orleans.

Obama was in the first year of a U.S. Senate term when Katrina’s powerful winds and driving rain bore down on Louisiana on Aug. 29, 2005. The storm caused major damage to the Gulf Coast from Texas to central Florida while powering a storm surge that breached the system of levees that were built to protect New Orleans from flooding.

Nearly 2,000 people died as a result, mostly in New Orleans, 80 per cent of which was flooded for weeks. One million people were displaced.
