NEW! Top 10 USA Destinations | eBook Versions of Lonely Planet

The ETG team have been dreaming of the USA this afternoon in our Berlin office. To celebrate this great travel destination, we've drawn up a list of our top 10 favourite regions and states to visit across this vast nation. If you think we've missed anything, feel free to add your own at the foot of this post.

Thanks to the new technology now available, the days of carrying a bulky travel guide in your bag is over. Lonely Planet guides can now be downloaded as individual chapters for a few dollars, and can be read in PDF format with colour maps and photographs on your smartphone, tablet, eBook Reader or laptop.

ETG Tip: Hire a car and explore this vast country. For those without a license catch the train for incredible views of the landscape. Our particular favourite route is by train from Los Angles to San Diego along the Pacific coast.

Top 10 USA Destinations | eBook Versions of Lonely Planet

1. Washington, DC & the Capital Region (PDF Chapter) Lonely Planet

No matter your politics, it’s hard not to fall for the nation’s capital. Iconic monuments, vast (and free) museums and venerable restaurants serving cuisine from around the globe are just the beginning of the great DC experience.

2. Great Plains (PDF Chapter) New Lonely Planet

Amid the endless horizons and raw natural drama are surprises such as the Alpine beauty of the Black Hills and the legacy of Route 66. There are miles of sand dunes, lushly forested countryside, small towns and great cities to explore.

3. Great Lakes (PDF Chapter) Lonely Planet

Don’t be fooled by all the corn. Behind it lurk surfing beaches and Tibetan temples, car-free islands and the green-draped night-lights of the aurora borealis. The Great Lakes themselves are huge, like inland seas, offering beaches, dunes, resort towns and lighthouse-dotted scenery.

4. Alaska (PDF Chapter) Lonely Planet

Big, beautiful and wildly bountiful. Although far away, rurally isolated and very expensive, there are few places in the world with such grandeur and breathtaking beauty as Alaska.

5. Texas (Chapter) Lonely Planet

Cue the theme music, and make it something epic: Texas is as big and sweeping a state as can be imagined. If it were a country, it would be the 40th largest. And as big as it is geographically, it is equally large in people’s imaginations.

6. New England - Eastern USA - (Chapter)

New England may look small, but don’t let that fool you. The cities offer a vibrant mix of historical sites, chef-driven restaurants and Ivy League campuses while you’ll find age-old fishing villages and sandy beaches on the coast.

7. Florida (Chapter) Lonely Planet

Blessed with almost year-round sunshine, Florida is a hothouse orchid – a bold, sexy, semitropical peninsula edged with bone-white beaches, caressed by teal waters and clad in lurid neon sunsets.

8. Rocky Mountains (Chapter) Lonely Planet

The Rockies are nature on steroids, with rows of snow-capped peaks, rugged canyons and wild rivers running buckshot all over the Western states. Don’t miss the super-sized charms of Yellowstone, Rocky Mountain, Grand Teton and Glacier National Parks.

9. The South - USA - (Chapter) Lonely Planet

The cities in the South are some of the country’s most fascinating, from antebellum beauties like New Orleans to New South powerhouses like Nashville. Natural treasures include golden beaches and forested mountain ranges. Tying it all together? That Southern food and hospitality.

10. Las Vegas & Nevada (Chapter) Lonely Planet

Mysterious and misunderstood, Nevada's a paradox, which makes packing tricky. Expect thrills aplenty for everyone, whether you're a nightclub aficionado, an adventure junkie, a kitsch connoisseur or a conspiracy theorist.
